They showed remarkable surface features such as large crevasses and several extinct volcanoes, including Olympus Mons whose base measures 550 kilometers across. Photos were also taken of the Red Planet's two small satellites, Phobos and Deimos. Mariner 9 The misshapen Phobos looks a little like a potato, always with the same face turned to Mars. Deimos is more spherical in shape. The probe operated for 349 days in Mars orbit. Its cameras were activated 14,004 times, collecting a total of 7329 photos-in other words 27 times more than all earlier missions. Marine 9 received 45,940 instructions from Earth before it was ordered to cut contact at 10:10 pm on October 27.
